The late Breege Staunton.

The funeral will take place this evening and tomorrow of a much-loved mother and Mayo native following her tragic passing.

Breege Staunton, of Altamount Street in Westport, Co Mayo died peacefully in the loving care of Mayo Hospice, Castlebar on Monday after a bravely borne battle with cancer. She would have been just 43 years old, today, October 23.

Breege was the beloved wife of Kevin Kelly, dearest mother of Ellen and Dylan, and adored daughter of Mel and Veronica. She will be sadly missed by her loving family, her brothers Padraic, Ciaran, Kenneth and John, sisters-in-law Denise and Niamh, mother-in-law Helen, father-in-law Jarlath, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Breege has been very involved over the last two years with the Westport Relay for Life fundraising campaign which has been hugely successful in raising thousands of euro for cancer research.

The Westport Relay for Life team paid the following tribute to Breege on their Facebook page:

“We are truly devastated to hear of the passing of our friend and inspiration Breege Staunton/Kelly," the team said.

"Breege cut the ribbon of our first Relay event and represented us so well doing the same at the national event in Dublin. A true leader who went above and beyond to support others and raise funds and awareness for others to ease their suffering.

"She had such a air of calmness and beautiful vibes of love and joy just surrounded her and you instantly felt the world was a better place when she was around. We really can't explain in words the impact this lady has left on our lives.

"We are so grateful for all of her support and the fantastic memories she has left us with. We send all our love and support to Kevin and their beautiful family and all who are heartbroken at this sad sad time. Westport and the world has lost a true angel, sleep easy our friend. We walk with you forever in our hearts.”

Both Westport GAA and Westport LGFA also posted their condolences on Facebook as Ellen is part of the U-10 girls team, and Dylan part of the U-9 boys team.

Breege will be reposing in Navin's Funeral Home this evening, Wednesday, October 23, from 5pm to 7pm.
