Ireland's acting sweetheart and former underage GAA star, Paul Mescal, returned to his roots this week with an outing on the pitch at Croke Park.

The Gladiator star is currently on a tour to promote the Hollywood blockbuster's arrival in cinemas this Friday (November 15), following on from the Irish premiere last Friday at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin.

Mescal has been spotted around Dublin to much fanfare in recent days, with trips to Trinity College and the Aviva Stadium for the Ireland vs All Blacks game on Friday last.

The Maynooth native was the Kildare minor football captain and also an accomplished hurler in his day before his blossoming acting career came calling.

Showing his grá for the game is alive and well, Mescal could hardly believe his luck when he was told he'd be gracing the pitch at GAA HQ.

When asked when he last set foot on the pitch, Mescal answered 2015 - when he started at corner-back in the Leinster U-21 football final as Kildare lost out to a star-studded Dublin team that featured future stars such as Cormac Costello, Niall Scully and Eoin Murchan.

Mescal showcases his dual-star abilities in the clip, knocking over points from the boot and the hurl before signing off the video by saying the experience was "great".

Gladiator II will be released in cinemas across Ireland on November 15.
