Taoiseach Micheál Martin appeared on the most recent episode of The Late Late Show on RTÉ One on Friday night just hours after the crazy exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Zelensky.

The Taoiseach described the encounter between the two as "very, very unsettling" and "quite extraordinary" in the interview with Patrick Kietly.

He went on to say that "it has been a huge unsettling setback today, there's no question about that."

But he believes that Europe will still stand behind the Ukraine:

"We can't lose hope here, we've got to hold our nerve in Europe. We've got to get behind Ukraine, engage with the United States and others, with a view to giving Ukraine the security that it requires."

Speaking on the sanctions that are in place on Russia by the European Union he says he "doesn't think Russia is as strong as everyone is saying it is, I think the sanctions have hurt Russia."

Following the incredible conversation at the Oval Office on Friday a spate of European leaders and politicians have reiterated their stance on the war in Ukraine including the Irish Tánaiste, Simon Harris writing on his X account saying:

"Ukraine is not to blame for this war brought about by Russia’s illegal invasion. We stand with Ukraine."
