The country's latest static speed camera will go live ahead of the bank holiday weekend, gardai have confirmed.

When activated, it will become the eight static speed camera in Ireland while there are a further five locations where average speed cameras are currently operational.
The posted speed limit on the road is 100km/h and any speeding offences detected by the camera from tomorrow afternoon will be subject to prosecution - meaning motorists will receive fines and penalty points.

Currently, the penalty for speeding offences is a €160 fine and 3 penalty points while higher penalties apply where court proceedings are initiated.

Commenting ahead of the camera going operational, a garda spokesperson said: "Static safety cameras have been proven internationally to reduce speeding. The locations were selected based on fatal and serious injury collision data from the last seven years and speed data, as well as feedback from stakeholders."
The roll out of static speed cameras are being funded from the Garda budget at a cost of approximately €2.4 million.
In addition to Kilkenny, static speed cameras are currently operational on the N17 in Mayo, N59 in Galway, N13 in Donegal, N69 in Limerick, R772 in Wexford, N22 in Cork and N80 in Carlow.
Five Average Safety Cameras are also operational across the country - in the Dublin Port Tunnel, on the M7 in Tipperary, N3 in Cavan, N5 in Mayo and N2 in Meath.
