A MAN, aged in his 40s, has been arrested by gardai in connection with the fatal assault of a pensioner in Limerick city overnight, Limerick Live has reported.

He is currently being detained in a garda station in Limerick city under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A garda spokesperson said officers in Limerick are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his 70s following an incident of assault in Watergate, Limerick city at approximately 11.30pm on Thursday, July 10.

"The man, aged in his 70s, was transported to University Hospital Limerick with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased on Friday, July 11.

"The scene in Watergate has been preserved for technical and forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau," said a garda spokesperson.

The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified.

"A post-mortem examination has been arranged. A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation," said the garda spokesperson.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

"Anyone who was in the Watergate area of Limerick city on Thursday, July 10, 2025 between 11:15pm and 12am and who may have any information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigating hardaí.

"Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make that footage available," said the garda spokesperson.
