However, according to recent reports, the election will likely take place on Friday, October 24, which will mean thousands of schools will have to close to students as they will be used as local polling stations. There are approximately 5,500 polling stations located in primary schools across the country.
A memo is going to the Cabinet on Wednesday, September 3 that indicates Friday, October 24, as the official date for the Presidential Election.
The only confirmed candidates so far are Galway West Independent TD Catherine Connolly and former minister Heather Humphreys.
Connolly has been endorsed by Labour, the Social Democrats, and People Before Profit.
Meanwhile, Humphreys is the Fine Gael candidate replacing Mairead McGuiness who had to withdraw due to health reasons.
Tánaiste Simon Harris has expressed his belief that Humphreys is an excellent candidate.
He posted on his Instagram: "I believe Heather can break down barriers and bring people together. Her record in public life has demonstrated that vision of unity and community."
GAA president Séan Kelly suspended his bid for the Fine Gael candidacy due to a lack of support from the party.
Meanwhile former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin is likely to be endorsed by Fianna Fáil, having received the backing of Taoiseach Michaél Martin.
Others who have expressed interest in running include Bob Geldof, Bertie Ahern, Conor McGregor and former Met Éireann meteorologist Joanna Donnelly.
The Presidential Election is expected to be held on Friday, October 24 with the inauguration taking place on Tuesday, November 11.
