Proposed 30km/h speed limit in Carlow 'awful slow' says Councillor

A public consultation on reduced speed limits in Carlow will take place in the coming months
The proposed speed limit of 30km/h in urban areas in Carlow has been described as “awful slow” by a councillor at a recent council meeting.
There will be a public consultation on the proposed speed limit once members of Carlow County Council vote to progress the policy.
The move comes from the Road Safety Authority’s goal of having no deaths on Irish Roads by 2050, according to the Carlow Nationalist.
“If you’re hit by a car travelling at 65kph, it’s similar to falling off the sixth floor of a building and gives you just a 20% chance of survival,” she explained. “In contrast, being hit by a car travelling at 30kph is more like falling off the first floor,” Orla Barrett, Senior Engineer with Carlow County Council, said.
Cllr Charlie Murphy responded to this statement with a “little problem” that he had.
“It’s awful slow,” he said.
“We can put in all the speed limits we want in the world, but again it’s an issue of enforcement,” he added.
Once the public consultation has happened, by-laws will be drafted, and a statutory consultation process will then begin.
Reduced speed limits must be implemented before March 31st 2027.
