In a Parliamentary Question, Fianna Fáil's Willie O'Dea asked the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the number of persons in receipt of a jobseekers' payments by type and county.
Minister Regina Dohery, in a written response, provided figures which revealed that up to February of this year there were 2,812 people in receipt of jobseekers' allowance and a further 464 in receipt of jobseekers' benefit.
To get jobseekers' benefit you must have enough social insurance (PRSI) contributions and the payment rates are graduated according to earnings.
To get jobseekers' allowance you must pass a means test. A means test is when your income is calculated to see whether it falls below a certain level.
