The matter came up at this month's meeting of Carlow County Council

Carlow's social housing stock is not allocated to Syrian refugees resettled in Carlow as such houses are acquired separately to meet the needs of the refugees, the local authority's Housing Officer Josephine Kavanagh has confirmed.

At this month's meeting of Carlow County Council members were given an update on the county's delivery of social housing in 2018 which revealed that 88 social houses are under construction by the Council, with a further 70 under construction by Approved Housing Bodies.

A total of 63 units are under construction on the Tullow Road with 40 units expected to be provided by the end of the year -which was welcomed by Cllr John Cassin.

Ms Kavanagh's comments came after Cllr Will Paton asked if any of Carlow's social housing stock in 2018 was set aside for refugees.

She said: "No, none of these are allocated to refugees," and that houses for refugees are "acquired separately".

"Fourteen Syrian families have relocated to Carlow and they're settling in well," Ms Kavanagh added.
