'Speed a proven cause of road crashes and casualties,' Carlow motorists urged to Slow Down

'A united call...'
Carlow County Council, The Road Safety Authority and Gardaí have issued a united call to all road users today to Slow Down on the area’s roads.
"Speed is a proven cause of road crashes and casualties, and the higher the speed, the higher the probability of serious injuries and fatalities," Dan McInerney, Director of Transportation, Environment and Water Services, Building Control & Emergency Services told us.
"Speed reduces the reaction time," said Sgt Michelle Byrne of Carlow Roads Policing Unit - Kilkenny/Carlow Garda Division.
Stopping distance increases exponentially as speed increases arithmetically. So it takes a long time and a long distance to bring a speeding vehicle to a stop.
"The driver of a speeding vehicle cannot deal with the unexpected. The only option is to drive below the speed limit wherever you’re driving," advised John McDarby, Road Safety Officer, Carlow County Council.
Gardaí will conduct a national speed enforcement operation “Slow Down” from 7am on Friday next to 7am on Saturday.
One hundred and seventeen people have died in 111 Road Traffic Collisions on Irish roads this year already.
