Is a snowy January on the way? Met Éireann forecasts freezing temperatures

A cold weather advisory warning is in place for the whole country this week as widespread ice and frost will remain.

Lows of at least -3 is expected throughout the week but it will remain mainly dry overall.

Cold today with highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees, in a light to moderate easterly wind. Mostly cloudy this morning but the cloud will break up through the day with some sunny spells developing. Mainly dry apart from the odd wintry shower in the south.

Staying mainly dry tonight but it'll be very cold tonight as skies clear and winds fall light. Temperatures will fall to -3 to +1 degrees with widespread frost and some icy patches expected.

A very cold start tomorrow morning with frost and ice slowly clearing. It will be mostly dry with sunshine at times, although a few showers are possible in the east. Highest temperatures of of 3 to 7 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze.

Becoming rather cloudy on Wednesday night but dry overall then during the evening. It will be quite cold too with lows of 0 to -2 degrees for western counties with some frost and ice but staying a little milder in the east with lows of 1 to 3 degrees in a light easterly breeze.

The rather cold weather will stay with us through Thursday too with the best of any sunshine to be had in the west. Further east it will remain cloudy with limited sunny spells and highs will range from 4 to 7 degrees in an easterly breeze.

Cold overnight on Thursday with lows dropping down to zero or -1 degrees for western counties with some patchy frost and ice. Further east it will stay a touch milder with cloudier conditions there. Lows in the east then of around 2 to 4 degrees in an easterly breeze.

Becoming very cloudy the on Friday with perhaps a few light showers too, mainly about the coasts. It will be milder during the day too with highs of around 4 to 7 degrees in light winds.

Cloudy with outbreaks of light rain or drizzle at times on Friday night. Not as cold as previous nights too with lows of 1 to 3 degrees in light winds and some patchy fog in the west.

Looking ahead to the weekend and it will be cloudy with some outbreaks of rain at times. Sunny spells will develop on Sunday however but temperatures on both nights over the weekend are likely to fall below freezing with some patchy frost and ice.
