Carlow experienced cold temperatures overnight that led to frost and ice on the ground on Thursday morning.

Carlow Weather's, Alan O'Reily, warns of potential rain on the horizon at some point during the day: "Down to -0.3c at my station with some frost and ice but a bright morning here while the Northeast sees heavy rain. Rain just off the South coast too and some of that could catch South and Southeast later. Enjoy the bright fresh morning if you have it!"

Met Éireann's prediction for the day warns for a much worse day ahead: "Cold this morning with outbreaks of rain in the north and northeast, falling as sleet or snow in places. A drier start further south but a spell of rain will develop here this afternoon, turning heavy at times. It will turn drier over the northern half of the province during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with light to moderate easterly winds becoming northerly."

The forecast then for Thursday evening: "Rain along the east coast will clear early tonight and it will turn dry with long clear spells for a time. Scattered showers will spread from the southwest later in the night. Cold with lowest temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees and some frost and ice forming in light southeasterly or variable winds."

The forecast for Friday morning looks a little but more positive: "A good deal of dry weather tomorrow morning with sunny spells and isolated showers. More frequent and widespread showers will develop in the afternoon, some turning heavy with hail possible and the chance of isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds."
