Met Eireann issue weather warning with two counties pinpointed for summer horror show

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for two counties amid a summer horror show of weather in Ireland.

The warning for Cork and Kerry predicts "heavy rainfall, especially in western parts of the counties with highest accumulations in mountainous areas."

Potential impacts are listed by Met Éireann as spot flooding, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility.

The warning comes into effect at 3am on Thursday and will remain in place until 9am on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann is predicting a wider turn to unsettled weather for much of the country in the coming days.

Their outlook states: "Unsettled to end the week and over the weekend with rain and showers, heavy at times."

Becoming overcast tonight [Wednesday] as rain spreads eastwards across the country, turning heavy at times in the west and southwest. Much of the east and northeast will stay dry until morning. Turning breezy too as southerly winds increase moderate to fresh with the rain. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

Thursday: A wet and overcast start on Thursday with widespread rain, turning heavy at times. Spot flooding is possible in parts of Kerry and west Cork early tomorrow morning, with the heaviest rain expected to fall there. The rain will slowly clear northeastwards through the day, with scattered showers following from the west. However, rain will linger in the northeast until nightfall. Fresh southerly winds, strong on southern coasts, veering westerly and easing moderate once the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Thursday night: A mix of clear spells and showers, some of which may turn heavy. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southwest to west winds.

Friday: Showers will become widespread and heavy early on Friday, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms and hail. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Friday night: Showers will ease early in the night, leaving a good deal of dry weather for the east and north. However, a spell of rain will move into the south and west overnight. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in light to moderate westerly or variable winds, fresh in the southwest.

Saturday: Cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain, becoming heavy in some areas. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in moderate westerly winds.

Sunday: Another day of sunny spells and showers, with some heavy showers possible. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in a light to moderate northwest breeze.

Early next week: Current indications suggest showers will continue for the early days of next week, though longer dry spells may develop also.
