Met Éireann has issued a number of severe warnings for strong winds, and heavy rain this weekend

Met Éireann has issued a number of severe weather warnings as Storm Darragh bears down on Ireland.

The latest named storm of the season is expected to batter much of the country this Friday night and Saturday morning.

The forecaster has upgraded its earlier warnings and says the storm is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to EVERY county late on Friday night into the early hours of Saturday.

Status red warnings have been issued for SEVEN counties - Donegal, Mayo, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Clare and Wicklow- with the first due to take effect from 9pm.

Local authorities across the country have placed crews on standby and motorists are being urged not to drive while the warnings are in place.

The status red warnings will remain valid until 3am on Saturday while the status orange warnings will remain valid until 10am.

A status yellow rain warning for several counties - Clare, Connacht, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Longford, Louth, Meath and Westmeath - came into effect at 10am this Friday while a status wind warning for all of Ireland came into effect at 3pm.
