LIVE: Watch the election of Simon Harris as Ireland's youngest Taoiseach

Dáil Éireann meets to elect Leo Varadkar's successor

Fine Gael leader Simon Harris is set to be officially elected as Taoiseach in the Dáil later following the formal resignation of Leo Varadkar on Monday evening.

After the formal vote in Dáil Éireann, the 37-year-old Wicklow TD will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin to receive his seal of office from President Michael D Higgins.

It's expected that Mr Harris will be proposed for the role by Minister for Social Protection and Fine Gael deputy leader Heather Humphreys. He will be seconded by Minister of State Peter Burke who is widely tipped to be appointed a Cabinet minister by the incoming Taoiseach.

Deputy Harris will make his first speech, as Taoiseach, to the Dáil, around teatime this Tuesday.

The make-up of the new government will be announced a short time later and the new cabinet will meet for the first time on Tuesday night.
