Bagenalstown Fire Station in Carlow will soon receive a €4 million upgrade

A fire station in Carlow will soon receive an upgrade worth almost €4 million.

Bagenalstown Fire Station has been allocated the capital funding for the upgrade works.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage will grant the funding, following an appraisal by Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service.

According to the Carlow Nationalist, local councillors were informed of the news at the October meeting of Muinebheag Municipal District.

Originally, the department had approved €2,778,244 in funding for the project, but essential site investigations identified underlying issues.

The infill underneath parts of the building need to be removed by a specialist contractor.

This caused the projected costs to rise by €1,118,756, making the total estimated cost of the project €3,897,000.

It also extended the construction period from the expected 12 months to 14.

It is understood that a contractor should be appointed by May 2027, with a provisional completion date being September 2028.

“It’s not easy to secure this funding, and we are continually punching above our weight level, or sometimes lightweight in a heavyweight division. But we continue to do that, and we very much look forward now to moving to the statutory process, getting the permission out to tender, and under construction next year,” Director of Services at Carlow County Council, Padraig O’Gorman, said.
