In Pictures: Carlow pupils showcase their work to mark conclusion of WEAVE Project

MORE than 650 students from Carlow and Dublin attended the final showcase of the two-year WEAVE Project, at the DCU St. Patrick’s Campus.

The WEAVE Project aims to increase student awareness of the different ways that coding, computational thinking, and computer science can be used in our society today.

It also encourages students to develop a critical eye and to question the application of new technologies in our world.

Throughout the WEAVE Project, teachers and students worked together to develop resources and activities that lead to the development of a computational thinking framework for Irish primary schools.

In Year Two of the project, there have been nine schools involved: 28 teachers and over 650 pupils. Teachers attended teacher professional learning days in DCU: then they brought back ideas and materials to work with their students - both teachers and students learning together.

Raising awareness of coding, computational thinking and computer science at a young age is important to help the students develop the type of skills that will be required of them in the 21st century.

The PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) played a key role, providing sustained support over the course of the project, and the plan now is for the PDST to implement a nationwide framework in computational thinking.
