Carlow locals encouraged to get involved with hurling for cancer research charity event

This year's hurling for cancer research match will take place Monday, 24th August at Netwatch Cullen Park, Co. Carlow.

Now into its 15th year, the annual hurling match brings together hurling, football and horseracing stars as well as an array of celebrities to raise vital funds that go directly towards cancer research.

Volunteers are needed to help out on the day, apply through the link below.

Head of Research, Dr. Claire Kilty said: “The Irish Cancer Society is incredibly proud to be largest voluntary sector funder of cancer research in Ireland.

“There isn’t a family who hasn’t been touched by cancer. 1 in 2 of us will unfortunately receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetimes.

“When we do, we deserve the best possible chance of surviving this disease. Thankfully, more and more people are now surviving cancer thanks to sustained and ongoing investment in groundbreaking cancer research.

“None of this investment is possible without amazing initiatives like Hurling for Cancer Research. Each and every year we are blown away by how this event is growing and capturing the imagination of the Irish public.

“It’s a game for all the family to enjoy and we hope as many people as possible get their tickets or tune in live on TG4.

“A huge thank you to Centra, who once more are supporting Hurling for Cancer Research.”

Tickets are €10 for adults and €5 for children and are available for sale in select Centra and SuperValu GAA Ticket Agent stores and via www.hurlingforcancer.ie.

For those interested in volunteering, your main task will be selling programmes and/or covering the stadium turnstiles.

You may also be asked to steward people or direct them to their location.

Staff members of the Irish Cancer Society will be there to assign you your task and answer any questions you may have.

This is an outdoor event, so you need to be prepared for any type of weather on the day, and make sure you have clothing to keep you warm and dry throughout the afternoon and evening.

Volunteers are required to cover the hours leading up to the event from 4pm to 8:15pm approx.

The gates will open at 17:30 for the public, with the match kicking off at 19:30.

Volunteers should have no difficulties being on their feet from the time our first visitors arrive up to the time the turnstiles are being closed.

You will be volunteering at a fixed location, there is no requirement to walk around.

The Irish Cancer Society operates a no smoking policy, and the volunteer must not smoke or vape while representing the society during the event.
