In a post fight press conference, boxer Katie Taylor said she would choose Carlow connected actress Saoirse Ronan to play her in a movie

Katie Taylor has revealed the Irish actress she would love to see portray her if a movie was ever made about her remarkable life and boxing career.

Fresh from her historic farewell fight at Croke Park over the weekend, Katie Taylor was asked at her post fight press conference who she would like to play her in a film.

Her answer was Oscar nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, who spent much of her childhood in Ardattin, Carlow.

Katie Taylor joked that Saoirse Ronan would have to make one particular change if she was to take on the role.

“She has to start working on her neck though,” she joked.

“She has a bit of a skinny neck and I have a big fat neck,” Taylor added, laughing.

The comments came after Katie Taylor ended her groundbreaking boxing career with a points victory over undefeated French fighter Flora Pili in front of a sellout crowd at Croke Park.

Almost 25 years after she fought in the first officially sanctioned female boxing fight on Irish soil, Katie Taylor became the first boxer to headline a fight at GAA headquarters, Croke Park, since Muhammad Ali in 1972.

It was a fitting farewell for a fighter whose career has played a huge role in bringing women's boxing into the mainstream in Ireland.

Following the victory, Taylor took the microphone to thank the people who had supported her throughout her career, with a special mention for her father Pete Taylor and his role in helping to mainstream women's boxing in Ireland.

Saoirse Ronan has had a hugely successful career on the international stage, receiving four Academy Award nominations for her performances in Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird and Little Women.

The actress was born in New York but moved to Ireland with her family as a child and spent most of her childhood years in Carlow.

She is now set to portray Linda McCartney in Sam Mendes upcoming Beatles biopics, adding another major role to an already impressive CV.

Although there is no official movie about Katie Taylor in the works, should her extraordinary career ever make it to the big screen, she already knows who she would like to see step in the ring.
