Speed limit on Carlow road brought back up to 80km/h after 'ridiculous' change

A relief road in Carlow will have its speed limit returned to the original one of 80km/h
The speed limit on a Carlow road will be restored to 80km/h after a ‘ridiculous’ reduction to 60km/h recently.
The eastern relief road’s speed limit was dropped to 60km/h on February 7th 2025.
Orla Barrett, Carlow County Council’s Senior Roads Engineer, told the local authority at the recent Carlow Municipal District meeting that the speed limit would be restored to its original one, according to the Carlow Nationalist.
The road stretches just 1km between the Deerpark Business Park entrance and the Hacketstown Road.
Cllr Fergal Browne expressed that reducing the speed limit in the first place was “ridiculous,” and that many people have received penalty points and fines in the past year.
Cllr Browne was supported by Cllr Fintan Phelan, who requested that the change be implemented immediately.
“I think it is the view of all councillors here that it should go up from 60kph to 80kph. Councillor Browne’s point is a very valid one, so to try and speed up the process, can we commence that today?” he said.
Orla Barrett outlined that there are guidelines in place that restrict the immediate implementation of the speed limit, such as giving An Garda Síochána 30 days notice before it goes to public consultation.
