€1m 'safe routes to school' investment has been a success story for these Carlow schools

These Bagenalstown schools are a leading example of the benefits of the ‘safe routes to school’ investment in Carlow
Bagenalstown is becoming a leading example of active travel investment in Carlow, following the completion of safe routes to school projects at Queen of the Universe National School and St Brigid’s National School.
The schemes, officially launched by Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, represent a combined investment of approximately €1 million and aim to make journeys to and from school safer for hundreds of children and their families.
Delivered by Carlow County Council in partnership with the National Transport Authority and An Taisce, the improvements include safer crossings, widened footpaths, traffic calming measures, enhanced School Zones, landscaping and upgraded walking and cycling infrastructure.
The projects form part of the national Safe Routes to School Programme, which encourages more sustainable journeys while reducing traffic congestion around schools.
Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor said the developments were making a real difference for local communities.
“Bagenalstown demonstrates how investment in active travel infrastructure can create safer, healthier and more sustainable places to live, learn and travel,” she said.
Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Cllr Thomas Kinsella, described the schemes as a significant investment in the future of the town and its school communities.
Director of Services Padráig O Gorman said Bagenalstown was becoming a model for active travel investment.
“Through strong collaboration and sustained funding, we are creating safer streets, healthier travel choices and lasting benefits for the wider community,” he said.
With both primary school projects complete, plans are also advancing for further investment at Presentation De La Salle College, potentially extending the benefits to even more students and families.
